Expectant birth father? You are not alone
Your current or former girlfriend, partner or spouse is experiencing an unplanned pregnancy and you believe you are the father. What rights do you have in decisions being made about your future child? What options and assistance are available to you before and after the child’s birth? An Amara unplanned pregnancy counselor can:
- Provide you with unbiased information in an environment free from judgment
- Help you understand your rights in terms of the three pregnancy options available to birth parents: parenting; adoption; and, the safe and legal termination of the pregnancy (abortion)
- Help you explore what roles you might play in parenting or in making an adoption plan for your child
- Help you, at your request, to communicate with the birth mother about this sensitive topic
- Provide emotional support, regardless of the choice that is ultimately made
If you are in contact with the child’s mother, we encourage you to meet with an unplanned pregnancy counselor together. If this is not possible, we are also happy to meet with you separately. If you are ultimately involved in parenting or in making an adoption plan for your child, there are many more services we can offer to you. These are the same as or similar to those we provide to single birth mothers or to couples.

“I was really hesitant when Erika told me she wanted to talk with a pregnancy counselor. But I realized that if I wanted to be part of Erika’s life, I had to support her decision and I had to go. Frankly, I imagined this counselor and these meetings to be so different than it turned out to be,” says Karl.
Supported by their Amara unplanned pregnancy counselor, Karl and Erika explored at great length their options of either parenting or making an adoption plan. One month before their baby was born, Karl and Erika decided to parent their child.
“It feels to me that God put my child in my life for a reason and I put all my selfish needs away to become a better person and a better father. Our Amara pregnancy counselor has been a blessing. She can always knock on our door and is always welcome in our family,” says Carl.
